    简介:Evolution of the interstellar medium leading to formation of stars is a key process for visible structural formation in the universe. Turbulence plays an essential role in ISM evolution, although given its complex nature, we are mostly still restricted to empirical descriptions of turbulence in ISM. I will report here a new observational technique, namely, the Core Velocity Dispersion (CVD), aiming to better characterize astrophysical turbulence. In two publications in 2012 and 2015, we demonstrated that CVD has the potential to reveal the structure function of ISM turbulence. I will also discuss some recent thoughts on how to use CVD to derive the energy dissipation rate. The better understanding of turbulence and its impact on ISM evolution, likely resulting from this and related efforts, could have impacts in the field of star formation.

    报告人介绍:Dr. Di Li received his bachelor’s degree in nuclear physics from Beijing University in 1995 and Ph.D. in astrophysics from Cornell University in 2002. He worked in Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics during 2002 and 2005, and in Jet Propulsion Lab during 2005 and 2011. He is the chief scientist of Radio Astronomy Division, National Astronomical Observatories of China since 2011.Dr. Li has led numerous research programs, including spectroscopic and mapping projects of VLA, GBT, Arecibo, FCRAO, SWAS, Spitzer, Herschel, and SOFIA. He pioneered several observing and data analysis techniques, including HI narrow self-absorption technique and a new inversion solution to the dust temperature distribution. These techniques facilitate important measurements of star-forming regions, such as the formation time scale. He authored or co-authored over 60 peer reviewed articles with over 1200 citations. His work has been featured in《Nature》magazine as a research highlight. He received the National Research Council (US) “residence research fellow” award and was a member of the NASA Outstanding Team (awarded in 2009). He is now leading the science preparation efforts of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) and also serves on the Steering Committee of Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF).
